Where should we put the capital of Europe?

At midnight on July 23rd, 1952, not so long after WWII, exhausted negotiators gave up and said, let's just start in Luxembourg and see what happens.

'Europe: Three Cities, One Roof' is a new documentary by Luxembourgish director Donato Rotunno that tells the story of how Strasbourg, Luxembourg, and Brussels became the unlikely capitals of the world's boldest peace project.

The jazz score, by @pascalschumachermusic was developed before a single frame was shot. Like jazz, Europe is built on improvisation, risk, and the hope that something beautiful emerges from the chaos.

Europe Day continues to be a living question. What are we building? Who gets to be part of it? And why does it still matter?

This year, Europe Day heads north. Anne Calteux, Head of the European Commission Representation in Luxembourg, is taking the celebrations to Wiltz. It is part of 'Hei & an Europa doheem! Home here and in Europe'. The message is that Europe is everywhere and belongs to everyone, including rural communities.

Anne is one of the most authoritative voices on EU affairs in the country. She constantly asks 'How do you make people feel that Europe belongs to them? You start where they live.'

Europe4Europe is a Rotary Club Luxembourg-Hearts initiative with a beautifully simple premise. Take one young person from every single EU member state. Send them together through the founding European countries. Watch what happens.

What happens, says coordinator Ellen Spencer, is that European identity stops being abstract. And these 27 young people go on to become Ambassadors for both Europe and their countries.

He is a brain of Space Law and continues to travel around the world at a rate that would exhaust you if you just read the list of what he does.

My show this week is deeply poignant: entrepreneur René Beltjens lost his wife to breast cancer not long after their third child was born. This has driven him to now raise over €1m, as he cycles from Tallinn to Gibraltar with @2wheels4purpose. I think they can raise more!

This money will go towards research to be led by Prof. @francois.duhoux with @fondationsaintluc - @tessa_schmidburg.

Nimkee Gupta is extremely open about her own ovarian cancer experience, and what she does now to be a vocal ambassador for this 'secret' cancer and how to look after ourselves before / after cancer. Prof. Duhoux and Tessa Schmidburg talk about the need for fully holistic medical care.

Andy Schleck might be a Tour de France winner but his mother's words have stayed with me ever since he uttered them: undergoing cancer / cancer treatment is harder than a Tour de France.

Luxembourg has a wonderful preponderance of female Ambassadors.

Ten Embassies of Luxembourg have come together to form an 'Advocacy Coalition' - a year long set of events to continue to show united support for #Ukraine. What happens to Ukraine affects all of Europe (and beyond).

When looking at the state of the world today, one might ask what is the power of diplomacy, or international law? How does one begin to have conversations with another 'side' if there are no overlapping points of potential compromise. What can we as mere citizens do? How can we effect any change against such oppressive powers?

Three of the Ambassadors present in this interview have lived / worked / studied in Russia. The wealth of knowledge shared by all of our Ambassadors in Luxembourg is immense and we touch on a number of topics in this week's conversation. For instance, we discuss the power of culture in such situations.

Ambassador Heike Peitsch explained the methods of a diplomatic mediator, who has to be deeply trusted by both sides, and find which topics of conversation might even begin to be opened, and which cannot be touched. For now.

The fatigue of long wars is sometimes how they end up being shaped: not a fast win or lose but an exhaustion by the people.

One of the most exciting interviews I've had the pleasure of researching and carrying out: @reneeflemingmusic for the @institutcerveau, Paris Brain Institute.

Reneé is a huge advocate for the link between music and the brain, and has edited an anthology entitled
"Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness".

In researching for this interview, I also learned about the work of clinical neurologist, neuroscientist [and harpsichord player] Dr. Paolo Bartolomeo, who is researching the benefits of music on stroke patients, or those who suffer aphasia.

All of this was in aid of raising funds for further research. The Paris Brain Institute works on an annual budget of about €100 million, half of which comes in the form of philanthropic donations. So, if your family has been affected by brain disease (and there are so many different forms), you might consider donating to the fantastic research that is carried out there.

Meanwhile, singing, music playing or even listening to music is highly likely to help your brain health or brain recovery post illness.

Last week, Minister Jennifer Murnane O'Connor was invited over to Luxembourg by our wonderful Ambassador Jean McDonald, ahead of the Irish EU Presidency which will start in July. Arthur Mensch, Co-founder and CEO of Mistral AI, came to the European Investment Bank Group Forum recently. Mistral has about 800 employees, it is less than three years old.

This is our discussion on stage. I have two main take-aways:

(1) He is deeply frustrated with the length of time it takes for people he wants to instantly hire in Europe (ie within one week) when they have to serve out 3 months notice periods. The 'visocity of hiring' as he calls it, is a 'disaster'.

(2) He can't find good enough CMO talent in Europe as there isn't a large enough talent pool of people who have gone through this process compared to the US.

This year there were 1400 participants and 44 speakers. Mel and the team work extremely hard over many months to make this happen.

Unfortunately, #defence in #space is a growing sector for reasons leaning towards defence (war) rather than the love of engineering and science. However, rather than ignoring the issues of our world today, the only way to make a difference is to learn, get involved and become part of the community.

My show this week is an interview with Lord Chancellor Chris Smith, Chancellor of Cambridge University since July last year.

Previously he was a UK Labour Cabinet Minister for Culture, Media and Sport; Chairman of the Environment Agency (he has a love of the Scottish munros), Chairman of the Advertising Standards Authority, Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge and so many more accolades.

Lord Smith studied English at Cambridge, earning a double first, went on to do a PhD on Wordsworth and Coleridge, and was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard University. He is still the President of the The Wordsworth Trust.

We speak about many things but naturally we spoke about the value of humanities in the age of STEM building the world and AI altering it around it. As you can imagine, he, along with @ai_anthropic president and co-founder @danielaamodei believe humanities subjects are extremely important in the future. They both studied English.

I personally believe you need both. One to build, one to understand.

Previously he was a UK Labour Cabinet Minister for Culture, Media and Sport; Chairman of the Environment Agency (he has a love of the Scottish munros), Chairman of the Advertising Standards Authority, Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge and so many more accolades.

Lord Smith studied English at Cambridge, earning a double first, went on to do a PhD on Wordsworth and Coleridge, and was a Kennedy Scholar at Harvard University. He is still the President of the The Wordsworth Trust.

We speak about many things but naturally we spoke about the value of humanities in the age of STEM building the world and AI altering it around it. As you can imagine, he, along with @ai_anthropic president and co-founder @danielaamodei believe humanities subjects are extremely important in the future. They both studied English.

I personally believe you need both. One to build, one to understand.

@seanblake80, having come extremely close to death, has found his voice and is now an incredible ambassador for this mental health issue.

Sean talks about how he descended into the mental madness of running to 'become invisible', not eating to the point that his four children never saw him eat a normal meal with them, and how his life was transformed thanks to Compassion Focussed Therapy at @stpatricksmentalhealthservices in Dublin.

Sean is now a member of NIMC’s lived experience committee (NIMC is the National Implementation Monitoring Committee that oversees 'Sharing The Vision' Mental Health Policy in Ireland).

In this conversation, Sean talks about how we can all help those we fear might be falling into this pit of of self-punishment due to trauma.

Apart from their deep knowledge and love of their work, Viola and Helena show how the thread of history is interwoven with our current lives, shaped by it, and a working knowledge of the past could help guide leadership today.

When hosting conferences, I spend a lot of time smiling, welcoming the audience and speakers, but I am also pretty serious, and always learn so much. Most of my time is actually spent listening and absorbing what's going on in the world around us, topic by topic.

This recent conference in #Milano was organised by the European Commission and @europeaninvestmentbank for 'DGAgri' to discuss how to finance Europe's agricultural future, which is a hugely complex jigsaw of regional farmers needing regional financing and insurance, to global corporations (such as @pepsico and @danoneyaourt who were present).

Feeding Europe is not something we should take for granted in a world where weather patterns are changing fast, water resources and soil quality are also rapidly changing.
